The city was founded on February 5, 1780 by decree of Catherine II. Its original name — Ust-Sysolsk. In 1930 the city was renamed Syktyvkar. This name in the Komi translation means - «City on Sysol». . . .

The city is located in the north-east of the European part of Russia in 1410 km to the north-east of Moscow. Syktyvkar spread on the banks of two rivers — Raws and Raws surrounded by forests. The total area of the city is 152 square kilometers.
